Every morning at 5:30, a white van pulls up to the back door. That's Mario from Conti's bakery with our bread. Sub rolls, kaiser rolls, rye loaves, and whatever specialty bread he's been experimenting with that week.
This relationship goes back to when my father opened the deli. Conti's was one of the first calls he made. Good bread is the foundation of everything we do — you can have the best meats in the world, but put them on bad bread and you've got nothing.
Mario's son is learning the route now. Third generation, just like us. There's something nice about that.
